NRL Finals Week One

Its finally here and I cant contain my excitement. September and NRL can only mean one thing... Semi Final football.

There isnt too much between the top four teams. Personally I think any of those sides can win it if they produce their best football. I like the new system that the NRL has adopted for this finals series and its impact can be seen by the week one match ups.

Bulldogs V Manly is going to be a sensational game. Manly will start favourites, just the way Des Hasler would like it. We all know the back story to this game with Des and Manly and all that rig morale. I think all of that has been flogged to death and a bit more focus will be on some of the individual match ups.

Imagine being young Josh Jackson having to mark up against Tony Williams on your Finals debut. Ben Barba and Brett Stewart, Kieran Foran and Josh Reynolds the list goes on. I think Manly will win this game, they are peaking at the right time and have been in second gear during their last 4 victories. That being said I wont be surprised if the Bulldogs come out of the blocks quickly and blow the game away. It will be a hard hitting game and the loser will be vulnerable when they have to play next week against either Cronulla or Canberra.

Melbourne V South Sydney. Billy Slater said today that this Rabbitoh's side has a very 'Melboure' feel about them. Greg Inglis, Michael Crocker, Matt King, Coach Michael McGuire all spent significent time with the Storm and won Grand Finals. Michael Crocker only lost one game in his time with the club, an outstanding record.

Melbourne having a home game this weekend is a huge advantage. South Sydney have never won in Melbourne and they have struggled to defeat teams higher than them or around the same position on the ladder. With Greg Inglis in the kind of form he is in, the other guys will jump on board and I am sure they will play well. We will learn a lot about Souths this weekend.

North Queensland V Brisbane. A QLD derby is just what the doctor ordered for the first week of the Finals. They will bring out the best in each other. The Cowboys held Brisbane to 0 in Townsville earlier this year. 2004 saw the same match in the Cowboys maiden Finals series and it was a 10-0 upset to North Queensland. That match was won on defence and I think this one will be the same. We have all see how brilliant the Cowboys attack can be but defence wins championships. Brisbane have struggles severely after Origin and have looked tired. They will bust their guts and give it everything but I cant see them winning this one. Lacked potency in attack recently, they need to turn things around fast.

Canberra V Cronulla. If you had of told me 8 weeks ago this was going to be the 6v7 elimination game, I would have slapped you. The Raiders since round 14 have been pretty good. They have won 5 in a row and have been playing with the semi final mindset since about June. Cronulla's bubble has burst and have won just 2 of their last nine games but they will be markedly better come Sunday. Todd Carney returns to Canberra for a semi final for the first time since he was sacked by the club. This could be a classic finals game and I think Canberra will win. Since they have treated their home games like away games they have been outstanding. Josh McCrone has been wonderful and Shaun Fensom is a workaholic in the mould of a Dallas Johnson. His running game is much underrated. Shillington will lead the forwards and Josh Dugan returning is a constant threat.

There is my look at the first week of Finals.

This is going to be a great series. I honestly couldnt give you an answer on who will win the comp. My answer will change several times over the next month.

Massive NRL News Day

Has there ever been a day where a Coach getting sacked is hardly talked about? I didnt think I would see it but here we are.

The new NRL Television deal was announced today and from a fans point of view I think they have come up a bit short. They have paid a billion dollars for virtually the same deal they used to pay half for. The Fox Sports coverage will be improved so some of the money spent is justified in that respect.

Delayed matches was the biggest issue from the punters point of view. In a day where Social Media (Twitter, Facebook) will tell you the result rather than sit through all the commercials, surely this would effect Channel Nine's ratings. There are those idiots who still tweet NRL clubs saying 'dont give away the results, we want to watch the game on replay'. My answer to those clowns is to get off social media sites, clubs have a duty to keep their fans informed and give them updates as they come to hand.

David Gyngell argued at the announcement that they lose money with live games so they need advertising hence they delayed telecast of friday night and sunday arvo games. I understand where he is coming from, afterall he is paying to have the games aired on his network. But this is 2012 and I would have thought there would be a way to have all games live. In the future we could possibly look at how the AFL run their coverage and even sports from the United States.

It really seems appropriate that Ben Hornby announced his retirement 2 weeks before he will play his last game. For the past 12 years he has been the games quiet achiever and when you mention St George-Illawarra, Ben Horby's name is associated with the red V instantly. He has played every season there except their inaugral campaign in 1999. Represented NSW and Australia, captained the Dragons to their first Premiership as a joint venture and is now the most capped St George player of all time. Its an outstanding resume.

Laurie Daley was also appointed coach of NSW for the next two years. For me this is a bit of a gamble. Daley has had success coaching Country Origin and the Indigenous All Stars. Daley also captained NSW and thrived on the big stage of State of Origin. He has huge boots to fill after Ricky Stuart has turned NSW into a team capable of winning a series.

We must also remember Daley was a selector from 2002-2010 where he and Bob McCarthy were heavily criticised after losing five straight series for not 'picking and sticking'. You can also argue that NSW didnt have the cattle available during that time to defeat QLD but I think this is irrelevent. Players are held responsible for their performances, they are given a chance to perform and show what they can do. These guys are professionals, they should be able to perform night in, night out. If the Mail man missed half of his mail run he would get the sack. You get where I am going with this. Selectors shouldn't be held accountable for players performances.

If surrounded by the right team of Coaches and staff, I think Daley can succeed in his new job.

And Brian McLennan was sacked this morning from the Warriors Head Coaching role. Fair enough too, how can a team go from Grand Finallists and future 'powerhouse' of the game to a side that gives up leads and gets flogged most weeks. Its not all his fault but the buck does stop with him.

Will hiring Steven Kearney get the Warriors going again? You would have to say no, he won nine games with Parramatta over 2 seasons and got the sack. Im worried they are going backwards.

Finals Race

The top 8 is done and dusted. Where they will all finish is all that needs to be decided. Yes I do realise that Canberra and Newcastle both have a chance to stay in the hunt within striking distance but I cant see them sneaking into 8th position.

Canberra should win today against Penrith but stranger things have happened, especially with the Green Machine. Supporting this mob is great fodder for a heart attack and their form line represents the Manhattan skyline, up and down. That being said I still make sure I watch the Raiders play every week because when it sticks there isn't many sides better to watch. If they had Terry Campese for a full season this year I think they would be a top 8 side. A big concern for them in the future is that Coach David Furner had to take his team out of the ACT the night before their victory against Brisbane and treat it like an away game. Canberra Stadium used to be the most feared road trip in the NRL. I have seen many good sides travel to the nations capital and lose by a big margin. I have also seen the Raiders side that couldn't win away from Canberra if you put it on a silver platter for them.

Its been the problem for the past couple of season and we keep hearing the excuse "we are a young side". That has to stop in the next few weeks for them to have any hope for making the 8 and if they want to play regular September football in years to come.

My boys, the mighty Newcastle Knights have been very hard to follow at times this season. It took 19 weeks for them to get used to Wayne Bennett and what he expects from his team. The win against Manly showed what they are capable of when they play the top sides. Its easy to say with the benefit of hindsight but I actually left the Knights out of my top 8 at the start of this season. Their club culture is built on being the underdog and the transition to being the 'biggest dog in the yard' was always going to take longer than one pre-season. They will miss the eight this year but their should be some good times to come. Tyrone Roberts has emerged as a player of great promise and taken a lot of pressure off Jarrod Mullen, who has also been really good in the back half of the year especially with his kicking game. Akuila Uate being dropped from Origin has been the best thing to happen to him in his short career and he looks hungry. The big key going forward is Darius Boyd beginning to look comfortable with his new team. Boyd and Mullen played as the five-eighth and fullback in the 2005 Australian schoolboys team 7 years ago and that old combination is really starting to click.

The Dragons this season, to put it simply, have been poor. 2012 was gone for them quite some time ago even though they were only put to bed last night by the Tigers. The pre-season for 2013 will be a massive test for Steve Price and his coaching staff. Defensively there isn't too much to worry about but their attack is weak. The experts will tell you defence wins you games but scoring a few try's won't harm your chances either. It could well be a case for re-inventing the wheel for St George as they have looked stale and flat for a major chunk of the season. Apart from Brett Morris out wide they don't have much strike power and with some spare money under the cap they could really use a quality centre with Matt Cooper certain to move on after 2013. Some tough times ahead for the 2010 premiers.

I am starting to get that feel for the Tigers and I hope I'm not let down. Last's night performance was just what the doctor ordered. Forcing 5 line drop outs and completing 34/40 sets in cyclonic conditions is 'winning' football. They were forced into playing that style but they will hopefully see the benefits in the coming weeks. Friday night against the Bulldogs shapes as a game of the year contender. Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah have been at their best in their last 2 games. The signs are there for one of those late season runs from the Wests Tigers. Their biggest obstacle is the Wests Tigers.

The Finals series gets better every year and this season will be no different.

After watching Friday nights game, Manly have convinced me they are capable of going back to back. It could well be the Sea Eagles and the Bulldogs playing off on the first weekend in October. It would be the most heavily saturated all Sydney Grand final in terms of media coverage for years, possibly ever.

Origin 3!

Here we are. Just hours away until the big one. My thinking hasn't changed, I still think the Blues will win tonight. Its going to be a classic!

Which team is willing to endure more to win the game?

Who is willing to risk long term injury to win?

Who is willing to bleed for their state? Who is prepared to go to places inside themselves they didn't know existed?

Whoever can answer all of these questions will most likely come out on top. Origin is won on guts, heart and determination. You hesitate, you lose. If you don't back yourself, you lose. Thats how close it is, both teams are that good one error can decide the match.

I remember Michael De Vere splitting his head open and getting stapled on the sideline to try and get himself back into the action and help his team mates.

There is footage of 'Mr Perpetual Motion' Ray Price after a game in 1984 collapsed on the dressing room floor covered in mud not being able to get to his feet to change out of his playing gear.

Shaun Timmins in 2004 playing out of position at five eighth. Its extra time, he gets the ball 40m out and slots a field goal kicking with his wrong foot. His knees were so bad he knew going into the match it would be his last game. He couldn't even run some days but he always got up to play Origin. A childhood hero of mine.

Bob Linder played a game for Queensland with a fracture in his ankle. Meninga broke his arm, Alfie broke his leg and Fatty Vautin had a heavy concussion, all in the same game. It was game 2 in 1989 and QLD finished the game with 11 players on the field, still able to win the game on the back of Wally Lewis magic. Heart and determination got them over the line that night.

I remember Paul Bowman tearing his ACL and somehow getting to his feet to make 2 more tackles before he was taken from the field. He was willing to risk long term injury and possibly his career to help his mates. It was something I won't ever forget. Bowman was one of those guys who wasn't gifted with speed, strength or natural ability but he gave you everything you had. A true Origin player.

There will be casualties in this game make no bones about that. Whoever keeps grinding away and takes their opportunities will get the job done.

Its mono e mono, who's the toughest? Who's the baddest?. Its a promotors dream! This game will break television records. 52 and a half thousand people will be there on the night and say in years to come, "I was there when we won 7 in a row" or "I was there when NSW won and bought the shield back south of the Tweed"

Which one will it be? Tune in tonight, you are sure to watch history.

Origin 3

Glenn Stewart out, Beau Scott in and Trent Merrin cut from the squad. Tony Williams is back on the bench. Brett Morris in and Aku Uate dropped. Billy Slater out, Dave Taylor out, Dane Nielson to the centres and GI to Fullback. Ben Te'o moves onto the bench to make his debut. Ash Harrison out and Corey Parker back into the side.

I expected some minor changes for both sides due to injury but not due to form. So much for loyalty, that goes for both sides. Dave Taylor is a classic example. Queensland would tell you how 'loyal' they are and stick with him despite his below average game in Sydney. They are feeling the pressure, believe me when I say that.

I can't work out the decision to drop Trent Merrin. 2 years in a row he has been good enough for the first two games of the series and suddenly dropped for the decider. While he hasn't been brilliant, Ricky Stuart has not been let down by him. He has been a mile better than his team mates Ben Creagh and Beau Scott at club level so he should feel a bit jaded.

All of my cynicism aside, I simply cannot wait for these two sides to get in on. It took a perfect 40 minutes from the Maroons last year to defeat the Blues. I don't think it will happen again. If the Blues weather the storm in the early exchanges they have the speed out wide and the impact off the bench to get the job done.

Tony Williams with a 30 minute burst in the back end of each halves will be a nightmare for QLD based on what we saw against the Roosters. Big plus for the side.

Everyone is talking up the Blues and they have looked the goods this series. QLD won't have a bar of that. They will lift at 'Lang Park' and if the Blues win, they will deserve it.

If NSW hesitate, they lose. If they think twice, QLD will make them pay.

REMEMBER: THERE IS NO FINISH LINE IN ORIGIN !

ORIGIN IS A SCARY PLACE TO BE ! The stakes can't get any higher than this.  It is a scary arena to play on but they are buoyed by the challenge. The challenge to be State of Origin Champions will drive these men to come up with efforts they didn't even realise they were capable of. It's a case of high risk = high reward.

BATTLES ARE WON IN THE HEARTS OF MEN ! Everyone knows Rugby League is a tough game, the 34 men taking part in the game on Wednesday know it better then anyone. Individual brilliance won't get NSW or QLD home, picking your mate up off the deck and pushing forward to the next tackle, taking that courage run to get your side out of trouble will get the job done. 1%'ers will decide interstate supremacy.

NSW will win the series.

Around The Grounds.

Here are a few shots I have taken from the past couple of days. Origin Wednesday was simply the greatest experience I have ever had as a Rugby League fan. I earge any sports fan to put it on your bucket list. The only disappiontment was the next morning when I discovered there was no tickets available for Game 3 in Brisbane. That will be the next thing to tick off the list.

The return to WIN Stadium on Friday night was another good experience. I got there early so i could get down to ground level and get a really good look at the new grandstand. WIN Stadium is one of the most pictureesque grounds in the NRL. It was a place growing up that I always wanted to play at. Being located right on the beach in the heart of Wollongong says it all. Would love to see the Steelers become a stand alone team once more but I won't hold my breath.

Sunday afternoon at Leichhardt Oval. Just a fantastic place to watch the Tigers go round. Arriving early, the anticipation from the locals is unreal. They are lined up at the gates nice and early to secure the best spot on the hill. Home owners in the surrounding streets fire up the BBQ and earn some money selling a few sausage sanga's to the fans on the way to the ground. Grandstand on one side, hill on the other with a bar and food kiosk. Thats what a footy ground should be (take note teams who play at ANZ). Meeting Tigers legend Ellery Hanley was another great experience. A really nice bloke who just loves his Rugby League.

It turned into being a very emotional day. The Grand Final loss in '89 every Balmain boy cried when Canberra stole the Premiership from the Tigers. Robbie Farah's Mother Sonia passed away just hours before kick off and believe me, it rocked the team and you could see it during the moment of silence. Benji Marshall was shedding tears during the moment of silence before kick off. Beau Ryan spoke pre-game to the team about pulling together to support Farah through such a difficult time. Any rumors about a rift between the players earlier in the year is way off the mark, you only had to watch the game today and listen to the press conferences post match to realise the bond between this group of men.

I am really starting to warm to the Bulldogs as a genuine threat to win the Premiership. The style of game Des Hasler has implemented is a testament to how good he is as a football coach. With big game experience as a coach, expect Canterbury to be there at the pointy end when the whips are cracking.

Brisbane need to get past Origin and we will get an accurate gauge on their form. If they produce close to their best in September, they are a hard side to contain.

It will be interesting to see how Melbourne cope without Billy Slater. Gareth Widdop is a very good fullback in his own right but how will this effect the overall balance of the team? A big chance for chasing teams to get into minor premiership contention.

Souths are going along nicely. Will get some big games back in a month or so and they can build for September football from there. Greg Inglis will have an enormous say in how far this team goes.

Cronulla have the mental toughness that every coach wants from their side. No Gallen yesterday and they were still able to fight back against the Warriors and come away with the two points. Not 100% convinced they can genuinely challenge for their maiden premiership but they will be a really tough side to beat.

Origin 2

Its on again and we keep hearing about seven straight series being on the line. Sydney will host Game 2 and if you thought Game 1 was good, business is about to pick up.

Tim who? some of you are saying. He is a big bloke from the foot of the mountains and his job will be easy. Run hard and tackle his guts out. He doesn't need to do any thing fancy, leave that to the other blokes.

Paul Gallen back at lock and Luke Lewis back to the bench with Watmough there for this game is a big plus. There is more starch and impact coming from the interchange. This was an area that was lacking in Game 1 and with the performances of  James Tamou and debutante Tim Grant in recent weeks it has allowed Ricky Stuart to tinker with the balance of his football side. Its still a very dangerous football side at the end of the day.

Watmough is the big plus for the Blues. He is taylor-made for the style of play Stuart is trying to get his side to play. Fast footwork at the line, good leg drive and physicality. Don't be fooled by the number 11 jersey he wears for the Sea-Eagles each week, he is as fast as most centres in the competition. Watch Game 3 of 2009 and you will see the devastating entity that is 'Choc Watmough'

I still need to see something from Ben Creagh for his selection to be justified. He is a good club footballer but coming into his tenth Origin game he hasn't really left me thinking that he had a really good game. Solid in all of his games without being spectacular would be a good way to sum up his Origin career. Back pedalling from Justin Hodges a few years back has left him with a reputation that he is soft.

Im glad that injury has been the only real reason for change in the side. Wholesale change wasn't necessary and Buhrer's selection wasn't needed this time round due to Farah being capable of playing 80 minutes. That saves up 2 interchanges to keep the forwards fresh and that enhances the quality that they will be able to produce. If Farah does need a spell Luke Lewis or Greg Bird can come in and pass the ball from dummy half.

Going to be a great game and I can't wait for it. Im sure you are all thinking the same so UP THE BLUES!!!

Referee's And Rule Changes

So every fan south of the Tweed is livid right now? I'm no different. The ten metre rule was average at best, Queensland's markers got away with murder, the Greg Bird tackle and of course the Inglis try.

Under the new rule which very few League fans know about, if a defender (in this case Robbie Farah) plays at the ball and knocks it loose its a free ball, six again if the attacking team regains possession. Greg Inglis has every right to do what he did. Had Robbie Farah hit the arm and Inglis lost it, no try.

If thats the rule then fair enough, they made the right call.

The problem I have with this is that the NRL rewards mediocrity. The separation rule for tries is also atrocious. The biggest grey area in the game is stripping the ball from a ball carrier and the ball carrier having bad hands.

Players drop the ball on purpose if they feel as though there is a hand on it to try and get a penalty. Thats not in the spirit of the game. More emphasis should be put on the ball carrier. Unless there is a blatant strip then it should be a knock on. As a young player you are taught to treat the ball like gold, now the ball gets treated like a piece of garbage.

In the 2010 Grand Final there was an incident where BJ Leilua in the process of scoring a try had the ball knocked out by Jamie Sowards knee's. Braith Anasta grounded the ball and the try was awarded. Why should a dropped ball be rewarded with a possible 6 points. Mediocrity rewarded.

Comedian Jimeoin talks about AFL and how kicking a behind is a case of "I can see what your trying to do so I will give you a point for that". Same happens now in Rugby League.

The Separation rule for scoring a try is just as ridiculous, as well as benefit of the doubt. Some of the tries given to the likes of Ben Barba for those efforts where they 'bounce' the ball rather that ground it are ridiculous. Your torso and head falling on the ball over the line can be deemed sufficient enough for a 'benefit of the doubt' try. Its just wrong.

Also, if I was to go up to a girl at a pub and say "I'm going to take you home tonight" and she replied "I very much doubt that" there is a massive chance to say I would be back home several hours later by myself. So why should the referee's think that maybe is good enough? Are they living in hope themselves? Unless they can definitively say its a try, it shouldn't be rewarded. What if a Grand Final is decided by a benefit of the doubt try? Its a scary thought!

Other than my gripes about those rules, the gap between NSW and QLD is nothing. NSW are just as good as them now, we don't fear them like we did 2 or 3 years ago. What is now needed is the little bit of class that gets them over the line for a try. The tide is turning. Ricky Stuart was well within his rights to be fined $50, 000 for bagging the referee's but he see's the bigger picture. If he controls whats in his control then the Blues are an enormous chance to still win the series. A lot of class showed from Stuart in that sense.

Origin 1

If ever there has been a rivalry in this country that has transcended a sport from an amateur game to a nationwide phenomenon its State Of Origin. Even the great Ray Warren said it wouldn't work.

32 years later its down right frightening to see the beast it has become. There's just nothing that comes close to it in this country.

Queensland dominated the 80's losing only 2 series. New South Wales between 1992-2005 won 9 series with 2 drawn. Queensland only won 2 series outright in 13 years. Since 2006 we all know the story. It goes in swings and roundabouts and Queensland's run will come to an end.

Ask anyone who has played Origin and they say the speed of the game is just incredible. Seemed the smart thing for Ricky Stuart to do was pick a side that is faster than the Maroons. Paul Gallen watching on from the sidelines says he can't believe how quick they are as a team. Good signs for the Blues. They must play with speed. Dominating the ruck is crucial. Punching through the middle third, all hands on deck and off we go.

When Todd Carney drifts across field tonight he must have options. Coming back under him, punching through holes for him. An all out assault is needed to take town the men in Maroon.

Im not worried about the Cane Toads targeting Mitchell Pearce in defence. They tried last year and he belted anything that came near him. Carney must do the same. Pearce should now feel comfortable in this arena. Tonight he plays game number 7.

Jarryd Hayne plays game 14 tonight for the Blues, he has never won a series. If Hayne tucks the ball under his wing on the kick returns good things will happen. If he comes in field and sniffs around for a half chance good things will happen.

Debutant James Tamou holds a big key. His opening spell he needs to make big metres and really make a dent in the Maroons defence. His defence will take care of itself. A big shoulder or two would be handy as well.

Origin is a scary place to be. Scarier if your on the losing side. This generation of Blues only knows losing. Queensland are just a footy side and last year they showed glimpses that the machine is starting to break down. The Blues are close.

If you aren't fired up now and if your not fired up after Phil Gould's last word, there is just no pleasing you. UP THE BLUES !!!

Origin 1 and why the Blues will win.

Queensland are the best modern day Rugby League side ever assembled! How do you prepare for a game that is seen as unwinnable?

Before all the thoughts of Queensland invincibility run through our heads we need to remember one thing. They are human. They brush their teeth in the morning (at least I hope so), they put their pants on one leg at a time. While Queensland resemble a well oiled machine they aren't one. Just 17 blokes. One football team. I remember being told in High School before the team played an unwinnable game against Matraville Sports High that 'they weren't that good'. It worked, one of the greatest upsets you could ever imagine. So great in fact that people I tell in Sydney don't believe.

And there is a key word right there. BELIEVE!!!

New South Wales must believe and I feel as though they do. I have been watching a lot of old Origin matches and highlights lately on youtube. Some of them great moments for the Blues, others that meant more for the banana benders north of the Tweed. 2009 and 2010 are years that NSW didn't believe in their ability and they got hammered. 2007 they actually outscored the Maroons but lost at the big moments. 2008 the Blues were beaten by one moment of Johnathon Thurston brilliance late in game 3. 2011 took the greatest half of attacking football ever seen in Origin to put the blues away. 2011 gave great optimism for Blues fans. In reality the series should have been over after game 2.

Of all the matches I watched the games where Ricky Stuart has been coach in '05 and last year have dominated my viewing time. What gives me great belief that this will be the year we get the trophy back is the character that all Ricky Stuart coached sides have. We saw it last year, a much greater resolve that previous years. Game 3 2005 is a perfect example of what Ricky Stuart is capable of in terms of getting maximum performance out of players. Queensland spent the first 20 minutes of that match attacking the NSW line. The defence refused to buckle, set upon set the Cane Toads were denied. They make one error and NSW go straight up the other end and counter punch. They win that match and the series by a big margin.

Games 1 and 2 in 2011 had exactly the same thing. I remember watching game one and saying to myself that I hadn't seen a gutsier effort in defence. The Blues hit the front in a matter of minutes after. The exact same thing happened in game 2 and the Blues came out the other side in the second half to give a performance that many people will talk about for years to come.

2012 we are lead once more by the freight train that is Paul Gallen. Great strike power out wide with some classy light weight forwards in the middle designed to run the behemoth Queensland pack ragged. Enigma's such as Jennings and Hayne have struggled at club level but are proven Origin performers. They love it when the lights are on bright.

In the Daily Telegraph this morning I heard Ricky Stuart quoted as saying back in January that "losing isn't an option, we must win".

The line in the sand has been drawn and the time is now. WE MUST BELIEVE.

Go the Blues!!!

NSW Origin Side

Well its come and gone with every man and his dog having a say. The Blues team has been announced and to say a few curveballs were thrown on the selection table would be appropriate. Buhrer? To say he is a massive bolter is an understatement. Ryan Hinchcliffe should consider himself unlucky. Really unlucky.

The rest of the side was probably as expected. Ben Creagh was probably another smoky considering Tariq Sims was considered a certainty. Hasn't ever really excelled at Origin level and the whole running away from Justin Hodges incident is hard to forget but he is a hard worker and will play important minutes from the bench.

1. Brett Stewart - Hard to leave out, back to his best and can score tries from all over the park. Great defender from the back. Selects himself.

2. Jarryd Hayne - Playing in a shit Eels side at the moment and not in top form himself, but apart from his magical run from 2009 when has he ever really been 'in form'. Always plays well in Origin, just youtube his Origin performances and you will see why they persist with him.

3. Michael Jennings - So he played reserve grade yesterday. Big deal. Was in a similar situation last year and played a blinder in origin one. Ricky Stuart will get the best from Jennings.

4. Josh Morris - Super strong, super fast, form centre this year south of the border. Picks himself.

5. Akuila Uate - Best winger in the game. Say no more.

6. Todd Carney - In blistering form and is untouchable on his day. Plays at a different speed to most other 5/8's.

7. Mitchell Pearce -  Back to his best in the last 4 weeks. Defended like a man possessed last year and he is as tough as a $2 steak.

8. Paul Gallen (C) - Needs no introduction.

9. Robbie Farah - Outplayed Michael Ennis this year and deserves his spot.

10. James Tamou - Massive improver this year and is getting better each week. In big games you pick big men. He is as big as they come.

11. Luke Lewis - Picks himself, plays like a champion each week.

12. Glenn Stewart - Another champion player. Will add a lot in attack down the right edge. Dominates for Manly on that side of the field.

13. Greg Bird - Plays his best game every chance he gets at Origin. Phil Gould talks about an 'origin player' and he fits that mould to the bone.

14. Jamie Buhrer -  Very, very dicey selection. A dud selection in my opinion. Hopefully he proves us wrong.

15. Ben Creagh - Been rewarded through loyalty by the coach. All the hype was with Tariq Sims but Creagh won't let the Blues down.

16. Trent Merrin - Been tremendous for the Dragons from the bench this year. Punches out big numbers week in and week out. He will have benefitted from the Origin experience last year.

17. Tony Williams - No more destructive ball runner in the game. A real X Factor coming from the bench. So he hasn't played in 9 weeks, the Blues need him and he will be fresh as a daisy.

So there is the team and my opinions on the selections. Leave your thoughts. Love to hear them.

Expansion and Competition Re-vamp

So with all the innuendo surrounding the Gold Coast Titans' long term future in the game, is the NRL ready to expand into new areas?

Not at this stage in my opinion. By 2015 the League should be looking to have teams based in Perth, another Brisbane side or another side across the Tasman. A second side in Brisbane will be a sure thing one day. The Bronco's currently get about 35, 000 to a home game each week, have a monopoly on talent in South East Queensland. You only need to look at how many Queenslanders are playing in other sides not based in the sunshine state and the dominance at State of Origin level to see that Queensland Rugby League is in a golden period much like that of the late 1980's.

Perth has a big chance to become and NRL entity once more. Games taken over to Perth have been well attended and they have a good junior system in place through the Western Reds academy who play at Harold Matthews and SG Ball level. If the new Commission decides to take a team to Perth it must be done right. Rather than try to take the focus away with outlandish player signings e.g. Israel Folau to GWS, they must continue to produce local Perth based juniors who in 5 or 6 years could be running around for a Perth based franchise. The revenue TV would make with another time zone would be outstanding and is hard to ignore.

Another team in New Zealand also seems a logical fit. You just have to watch their Toyota Cup side play each week to realise that they have a production line of players that the Warriors can't keep under their salary cap.  They have a chief financial backer if plans go ahead for this second team and again its a great place TV rights wise.

Greg Florimo and David Fairleigh are busting their boilers to get the Bears back into the competition playing from the Central Coast. David Gallop keeps his cards close to his chest on the subject and I think Central Coast league fans would rather have their own team with its own identity rather than a re-branded North Sydney Bears. It amazes me that a team from the Central Coast hasn't been in the competition for several years.

So with an 18 team competition you split your Sydney based teams with teams from interstate and have to leagues of 9 teams. You play home and away against all those teams in your conference bringing you 16 games plus another 4 games against teams from the opposite conference with home and away games alternating in the following years.

Have a top 4 semi finals series in both conferences. Use the system of a 'major' and 'minor' semi final used in country football. Teams one and two play in the major, winner goes to the conference final while the loser gets a second chance the next week when they play the winner of team three and four in the minor. Week 3 would see the conference final and week 4 would be your so called 'Super Bowl' with both conference winners playing in the Grand Final.

So there is my thoughts on where the competition could be headed and the way I would like to see it done. Let us know what you think.

NSW Origin Side

In about 3 weeks Ricky Stuart will announce his team that will attempt to break the 6 year strangle hold the maroons have had over their southern rivals. I figured why wait 3 weeks. Here is my Origin if it were named tomorrow.

1. Josh Dugan- Outstanding on debut last year and a great attacking weapon and terrific broken field runner. The logical long term custodian for the Blues.

2. Jarryd Hayne- Get on Youtube and watch this blokes Origin highlights. He picks himself. What he can do on a football field almost no one else can. Thrives under the Origin spotlight.

3. Josh Morris- Back to the same form that saw him picked 3 years ago. Strong as an ox, among the fastest in the game, Morris is a danger anywhere on the field with the ball and a very capable defender.

4. Chris Lawrence- Exactly what you look for in a centre. Big, fast and strong its a wonder he hasnt made his debut already.

5. Aku Uate- The games premiere winger. Say no more.

6. Todd Carney- In a good frame of mind he is deadly in attack. A natural match winner that needs to be in the side. Gallen has been impressed with his work ethic and defence which is as gooder recommendation as you can get.

7. Mitchell Pearce- Incumbent halfback and showed his class for city on the weekend. Breathing down his neck is a much improved Jarrod Mullen and the ever reliable Peter Wallace. His toughness was a major talking point last year and that will be an important factor come selection time.

8. Paul Gallen (C)- No description needed. Best Forward in the world bar none, case closed, full stop.

9. Danny Buderus- A Blues legend who is still the best dummy half available at 34. Ennis playing at about 70% this year and has been half the player. 'Bedsy' is a moral.

10. James Tamou- Probably the toughest decision to make. Has played well this year and in big games you pick big men.

11. Greg Bird- The yang to Gallen's yin. You cant have one without the other. Simple as that.

12. Anthony Watmough- Go and watch a replay of Game 3 2009. The most dominant performance by a forward I can remember in State of Origin.

13 Glenn Stewart- Tireless worker and very classy with ball in hand. Down the right edge he is a handfull to any defence. 2011 Clive Churchill Medallist.

14. Kurt Gidley- The bloke every side needs. Gives a lift when he comes on and can cover almost every position on the field. Such a crucial player for this side.

15 Luke Lewis- Petero Civoniceva has said before the man the Maroons fear most. Can play out wide or in tight and he has a ticker the size of Texas.

16 Tariq Sims- Explosive, dynamic and hard to handle. Sims is the future of this pack. Will probably spend some time as a front rower. He will be required to play major minutes.

17. Trent Merrin- In the last year he has become the best interchange front rower in the game. Makes plenty of metres with ball in hand. Another tough decision but im more than happy to take a gamble on this one.

So there is my first 17. Hard to leave some guys out ie Jennings, Beau Scott etc. Its as simple as this. New South Wales play to their enormous potential and with Paul Gallen leading the charge, NSW are a massive chance to win the shield back.

League Eligibility A Joke.

Last year around State of Origin time I saw a Facebook group and in a way it summed up the farce that is Rugby League Eligibilty. It read "Define dickhead; Born and bred in New South Wales and I support Queensland". If you think back to the whole Greg Inglis debacle it hits the nail on the head. The current State of Origin rule is you first senior game is the state you are eligible for. Inglis played his first senior match for Hunter Sports High School in Newcastle, New South Wales. Same thing for Israel Folau, funnily enough he went to school Westsfields Sports High School in Sydneys west. Both players move a year later and make it in the Queensland system and suddenly they are claimed by Queenslander. Its not the first time its happened and not the last.

Fast forward to 2012 and we have a similar situation with James Tamou defecting to Australia only 6 months after being in the New Zealand train on squad. Fellow Kiwi's have labelled it bizarre and can't understand it. He is eligible to play for both nations but surely there must be a rule in place to say the first team that you make it for a train on squad or academy etc then thats where your allegiance lies.

Under 20's State of Origin played for the first time this weekend is also a joke. Korbin Sims, younger brother of Tariq (who's allegiance is NSW) was originally picked for Queensland before injury. The rule with this concept that this game has no bearing on what state you are eligible for in the future if you are good enough to make it at senior level. Korbin could well find himself playing for the Blues after being selected for the Maroons as a 20 year old. Can anyone else not see the problem here!

The Commission needs to come together and rule in black and white what the rules are. They seem to be different every year and cater for every situation.

Nathan Fien having a dig at James Tamou was absolutely laughable. In 2001 the Queensland halfback was Nathan Fien. In 2005, the New Zealand Halfback was Nathan Fien. Talk about throwing stones from a glass house.

Brad Thorn came from New Zealand to play for Brisbane. Queensland claim him somehow as do Australia and he plays for both. He switches back to play Union and becomes a folk hero wearing the All Blacks jersey. Tony Carroll played for New Zealand before he somehow is allowed to play for Queensland and Australia.

Steve Rogers was always thought to be a Queenslander but played for NSW, his son Mat playing for the Maroons.

Peter Stirling born in Toowoomba. Billy Moore, Famous for the 'Queenslander' chant was born in Tenterfield. Sam Thaiday was born in Sydney. These are just a few players born outside the state they went on to play for. Where is the rule in black and white.

The word origin means 'the beginnings of someones existence'. Does that not ring alarm bells for the suits and ties who run the game.

For too long the inmates have run the Asylum. Its time it has to me made clear so these incidents don't happen in the future.

Ups, downs, highs and lows.

So the NRL is barely 3 weeks old and there is more controversy than a Manly season launch. Canterbury no longer 'flying under the radar', Newcastle and Wests Tigers struggling. As for Parramatta, discussing the ins and outs of politics is easier than trying to get to the bottom of that rabble.

I am worried for my beloved Knights. So much expectation on Wayne Bennett but the task of turning that club into a powerhouse NRL club. He still doesn't have the roster he wants and more importantly getting all the players to believe in their ability and change a 'losing' culture. It isn't panic stations yet but the next few weeks are crucial moving forward.

Wests Tigers are the West Tigers and we love them for it. We are also quick to bag them when it goes wrong as it did against St George Illawarra. Reports suggest that the inmates are running the asylum so to speak but personally I can't see 'Shifty' Sheens letting that happen. Come July/August the entire Rugby League community will marvel at the feats of Marshall, Farah and company.

Canterbury and Warriors played the game of the season so far in my opinion. 32-16 in favour of the Bulldogs wasn't a fair reflection of the skills on display from both sides. The 'dogs first 20 minutes was outstanding jumping to a 16-0 lead early. Enter Feleti Mateo and the Warriors came roaring back to life. Mateo off the bench was simply untouchable setting up two tries and scoring one himself to get New Zealand back into the contest. Not 100% sure about his allegiance with Tonga but if he has changed his loyalty to New South Wales he will certainly be hard to leave out.

And what to say about the Eels. Something has to change and change fast. I really feel for Nathan Hindmarsh who busts his guts every week for that club. The recruitment at Parramatta reminds me of the England cricket team of the 90's. Looking for a superstar to save them instantly and when it doesn't happen the s#!t hits the fan. Chris Sandow's signing had bad news all over it. Sandow catches fire a few games a year and isn't worth the same amount of money as a Billy Slater or Cameron Smith. What this has done has left them short of cash to recruit in other positions i.e. finding some forwards with some mongrel and a bit of class.

The early player movements i.e. Dave Taylor and Beau Scott is farcical. Commission needs to address this asap.

Apart from that the footy in general has been pretty good. The competition will only get stronger as Origin sides will be named in the next 6 or 7 weeks.

NRL 2012

While the summer of cricket has been awesome its hard to believe that the NRL season begins in just nine days. A big year to look forward to and their will be many surprises along the way. I thought it would be a good idea to run over all the teams and see who has the goods in their pursuit of premiership glory.

Brisbane Broncos
The big hurdle for 2012 will be life after Lockyer. Peter Wallace will need to step up a gear along with Corey Norman and Ben Hunt if the Broncos are to make the finals. Petero Civoniceva is a big signing and will lead a young and hungry pack of forwards. They should still make the 8 but a lot will come down to how well Peter Wallace leads the team around the park.

Canterbury Bulldogs
Des Hasler was the big change over the summer for the dogs. Many of his Manly stars were predicted to follow but all stayed with the Sea Eagles. All reports have indicated a new sense of discipline has been instilled into the Bulldogs, only time will tell. A big forward pack with some exciting outside backs, most notably Ben Barba will have a big say in their top 8 aspirations. Trent hodkinson had a solid year in the halfback role but I don't know whether Kris Keating is the right man for the number 6 jersey. They will finish no higher than 6th in my opinion.

Canberra Raiders
They can only go up after an injury riddled 2011 season. Terry Campese is fit and ready to go round one, massive plus for the green machine. With some of the best young talent in the league i.e. Josh Dugan, Jarrod Croker, Joel Thompson, Shaun Fensom and Josh McCrone they will be a tough opposition this year. They should be aiming for a top 6 finish as well as winning away from Canberra Stadium on a regular basis.

North Queensland Cowboys
Relatively unchanged roster from 2011. Disappointing end to last season but I think they could be a genuine premiership threat if they can field their best team each week and Johnathon Thurston only misses games he is rested for origin. Provided JT can play about 21 games for his club they should be a serious top 4 contender.

Gold Coast Titans
Need to make the top 8 this year after a horrific 2011 campaign. They recruited some big names for this season and they will be under a lot of pressure to perform and bring the crowds back after dismal gate takings and often flawed attendances. They shouldn't  make the top 8 but stranger things have happened.

Manly Sea Eagles
Many have written them off way too early. Des Hasler may have left and the board may be ruining the club  but they are the reigning premiers and have retained a large portion of that championship winning side. Tough first 5 weeks with all away games. They should finish bottom half of the 8.

Melbourne Storm
Im going to predict 'same ol same ol' for the Storm this year. No reason why they can't challenge for the title and frankly if they aren't there when the whips are cracking I will be shocked. Top 4 if not top 2 finish for the men in purple.

Newcastle Knights
Big year ahead for the Novocastrians. Big off season recruitments most notably 'super coach' Wayne Bennett. Many experts believe they can win the competition this year but I think thats too soon. They should win a premiership in the next four years but as everyone knows, these things don't come on a silver platter. Bennett will change the attitude and the way they play but he won't guarantee success. Genuine top 4 contenders and premiership threat.

Parramatta Eels
Shouldn't make the top 8 after a deplorable 2011 season. They have recruited smarter for 2012 as opposed to 2011 and will be a better team. They need to learn how to win the tight games after losing so many of them last season. I don't think they will make the 8 but I won't run the red line through them just yet.

Penrith Panthers
New coach Ivan Cleary will get the best out of this group in due time but I don't think 2012 will be their season. That being said the NRL needs them to be successful with the GWS Giants playing in the AFL for the first time. This is seen as a direct threat in the battle for Western Sydney and the Panthers need success on the field for the NRL to have success off the field. Probably won't make the 8 but if they do it will be no higher than 7th.

Cronulla Sharks
My tip to be the big improvers in 2012. They have recruited smartly given the limited resources they have. Todd Carney was the big signing and it was one the Sharks needed. While Carney has had his problems off the field all reports are he is in a good headspace at his new club. Good trial form against Manly and a narrow loss to the Knights gives an indication they have worked hard through the offseason and are ready to go this year. Like Parramatta they need to learn how to win the tight ones. Top 8 finish, no higher than 5th in my opinion.

South Sydney Rabbitohs
Will this be the year they finally make the 8? One semi final game in 23 years for the 'pride of the league' is simply not good enough for their long suffering fans. The time for talking is over and results need to come from a side that has possibly the most talented playing roster and a hard taskmaster in their new coach Michael McGuire. I think they will play semi final football this year. big disappointment if they don't.

St George Illawarra Dragons
Not sure what to make of the Dragons in 2012. After watching them in the Charity Shield I think they will be a good chance of making the 8 but I think they are no longer a genuine contender for the premiership. Some talented youngsters from the Illawarra region coming into the side this year will ensure some success in the future. Should make the 8, can't win the premiership this year.

Sydney Roosters
Shouldn't do too much having the youngest playing roster in the competition. Expect them within a year or 2 to be a strong team seeing they are going through somewhat of a 'rebuilding' phase. Wont play September football.

New Zealand Warriors
Last years Grand Finalists should be there or there about again. Talented playing roster with some young players coming through from their championship winning Toyota Cup side. Konrad Hurrell is the player to look out for as rookie of the year. Freakish ability and a former student at Auckland Grammar which is known worldwide for producing All Blacks.

Wests Tigers
My pick for the premiership. After 2 years of close finishes in the semi finals I think this is the year that Benji Marshall and his troops go one better and take out the title. Should be minor premiers, anything lower than a 4th place finish will be disappointing considering the talent at their disposal.

There is my view on all the teams for the 2012 season. I hope everyone enjoys the footy this year but most importantly a Knights Premiership.
